For the best part of a month I ’ ve had a certain catchy jingle stuck in my head .
Travel all over the countryside , ask the Leyland , ask the Leyland ...
If you ’ re a true Aussie , over the age of 45 , then you know how it goes and probably now have the song stuck in your head too ( sorry about that , but I did warn you ). It was of course the theme song for the iconic 1970s weekly TV show “ Ask the Leyland Brothers ”, the world ’ s first truly interactive reality show that introduced Australians to their own continent . When Mal and Laraine Leyland decided to take a short break back in January to settle in to their new Tassie home , we thought it would be a great idea to resurrect the concept . The timing proved to be perfect , because Mal was unpacking boxes in his massive new man cave ( aka office ) and digging out heaps of great photos from years gone by . We hope you enjoy the very first ROAM episode of “ Ask the Leylands ”. We welcome your questions for our next issue . Best of all , now you
can email the Leylands , rather than rely on the post ! Working with a journalistic legend like Mal is definitely one of the highlights of my job . The other biggie is getting to play “ history detective ”. For this issue , Phil Terry and I caught up with Dick Hart who spent most of his life finding and restoring what I believe is Australia ’ s most iconic caravan , the Highway Palace . It ’ s a story I ’ ve been looking forward to bringing to you for some years . As it has turned out , it ’ s rather timely we do it now . This year the Highway Palace celebrates its 70th anniversary and Dick is looking for a new owner to take over custody of this magnificent piece of Australian caravanning history . Perhaps it could be you ?
