Charlene Boisvert Thompson ’53, of Saco, passed away at
age 79 on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at Gosnell Memorial
Hospice House in Scarborough. She earned her Bachelor’s of
Science at Gorham State Teachers College (now the University
of Southern Maine) and completed graduate work at Boston
University and the University of Southern Maine. Her teaching
career spanned over 30 years in the Saco school system where
she taught English, literature, and social studies in grades
5-8. She was chair of the Language Arts department at Burns
Junior High School for several years and was an initiator
of New Horizons—one of the first programs for gifted and
talented students in the state. Charlene served on several
boards and committees throughout her lifetime including
the Saco Education Association, Maine Teachers Association,
MTA Women’s Caucus, and York County Retired Teachers
Association. She is remembered in the Saco community for
her passion for education and unwavering dedication to her
students.
Thornton Academy receives numerous memorial
donations each year recognizing members of the Thornton
community who have passed away. Thank you to all who
