STAY HEALTHY
ON HOLIDAY
We certainly hope that you will…so below please find some tips.
Y
ou probably are aware
of all of them already,
but might be tempted
to forget them at the
last moment.
Sunbathing; the atmosphere tends
to be humid, so it is unlikely that the
heat will give you a headache.
However after 10 am do use sunblock and try to avoid the mid-day
sun. It is not a good idea to go to
sleep in the sun. This is all too easy
after a beer! Remember to take other
liquids from time to time. Even on a
day when it seems cloudy the sun
will reflect through and cause sunburn if you are not protected. It is
best to keep the children covered
when they are in the sea since even
high factor creams tend to wash off.
Sunstroke is quite a usual complaint
and very easily dealt with.
Symptoms:
headache,
feeling
of sickness, faintness, shivering,
running a temperature, diarrhoea.
Remedy: provide plenty of room
temperature soft drinks; keep the
person covered with cold compresses
to forehead etc. and Aspirin if
necessary and a light diet, preferably
with salt. Turkish ‘ayran’ which is a
drink made with yogurt with salt can
be bought in most grocer shops. The
effects of sunstroke will last for 24
hours.
Sunburn: when the skin turns red
and feels warm to the touch, you do
have sunburn. It is best to treat this
as soon as possible prior to oedema
and blistering.
The local remedy is to cover the
area with yogurt, which can be
substituted by tomato paste so you
have a choice of flavours and colours!
I myself tend to use white toothpaste
if the area is small.
So take your choice! The acid of the
yogurt etc. will cool the area and
prevent blistering. Third degree
burns which generally occur on the
shoulder should be treated by a
medical doctor.
