Most of the Notre Dame High School students who scored high in the National Merit Scholarship Program (l-r) Lynn Scerbak, Sarah Shaffer, Kaela Crowley, Julia Ryan, Amerlyn Zeta, Isabel Ullman, Marai Shah, Holly Nguyen, Varsha Sathappan, Caitlin Flammer, Jaclyn Woodward and Sumaya Mulla-Carillo (Not present: Tracy Nguyen) National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes Notre Dame students Thirteen Notre Dame High School (San Jose) students have joined other high school seniors recognized in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Because of their performance on the PSAT, these students will be considered for National Merit, college and corporate-sponsored scholarships. Each of them was recognized as either a Commended Scholar, Achievement Scholar or National Hispanic Scholar. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition for recognition and college undergraduate scholarships. Established in 1955, it is privately financed and not-for-profit, operating without government assistance. Competition is open to all U.S. high school students who meet requirements which include taking the PSAT/NMSQT exam (Preliminary SAT) in their third year of high school. About 1.5 million students in 22,000 high schools enter the National Merit program each year. St. Leo School honors Students of the Month St. Leo the Great School (San Jose) honored October Students of the Month at a ceremony Oct. 16 in the parish church. Parents, teachers, staff and students gathered to sing “St. Leo’s On Fire,” the school’s version of Alicia Keyes’ song “Girl on Fire.” Students were honored for dedication to academic work as well as efforts at being contributing members of the community. Those recognized included: Kindergarteners Thomas Campisi, Madeline McGuire, Joshua Couyer, Julia Bouron; First graders Klaus Eckert, Abel Lara, Amanda Ochoa, Mei Tambuluri; Second graders Margaret Conley, Alex Galbraith, Shea Lopez; Third graders Abby Michel, Aiden Bojorquez, Sophia Ruiz; Fourth graders Ava Casto and Lucas Paredes; Fifth graders Elianna Owens and Lizbeth Bonilla; Sixth grader Rachel Ehuan; Seventh graders Malia Arenas and Matthew Turner; Eighth graders Zeff Iorizzo and Emily Barneond.
