tvc.dsj.org | May 23, 2017 CATHOLIC Saint Catherine School Celebrates Earth Day Earth Day is a big event for Saint Catherine School. Each year the Green Team chooses a theme for the event. This year the school focused on garbage. Classes viewed videos on trash disposal and its impact on our environment. Additionally students arrived at school one day to discover that all the trash receptacles were gone. A bag was given to each student for him/her to keep trash for the day. At the end of the day students took their garbage home and discussed ways to reduce daily trash in school and at home. The following day students completed pledge sheets on which they identified one thing they could do to minimize that amount of trash going to landfills. Students were delighted to learn that thanks to their recent eWaste and plastic bottle drives, the school purchased two composters to be used to compost lunch waste. The compost will be used in the school garden. This activity directly links to the school’s student learning expectation of being stewards of our environment. Ancient Civilization Projects Take on a New Life at Holy Spirit School Each year sixth graders at Holy Spirit School study the ancient civilizations of Greece and Egypt and each year Mrs. Terrizzano makes these civilizations come to life for her students through her discussions, projects and visual aids. This year, the class used technol- ogy to give their assignments an extra twist. Students did the usual written report using the research and outlin- ing techniques we all know. Then, they created a three-dimensional project. The projects included pyramids, burial masks, ancient board games, clothing or papyrus. Students recorded themselves presenting their projects in front of a green screen that later became an Egyp- tian background. These recordings were linked to a photo of the project itself. At a recent open house, when pro- spective parents visited the classroom, they could use an iPad to scan the projects and the student’s recording would appear on th e screen and lead them through their project description. It was a wonderful way to showcase everything the students learned. Art Making a Difference at Saint Francis High School Saint Francis High School students in a Drawing 1 class have forged a bond with children 6,000 miles away, using art to remind them that as individuals, they are valued and important. The students partnered with the Memory Project, an organization that asks art students to produce and do- nate keepsake portraits of youth from around the world who face substantial challenges – poverty, war, loss of par- ents – and who have few, if any, printed photos of themselves. The organization provides art teachers with photos of children from orphanages, care centers and schools, and students then create portraits to be sent back to each child. Art teacher Sylvan Adams and her classes have participated in this project several times over the years; this year, they were paired with children from Ukraine. “This kind of exchange between kids is a heartfelt interaction,” said Ms. Ad- Invention & Tech Challenge Night at Saint John Vianney Bright, curious minds are capable of wonderous things! Saint John Vianney School incorporated its Tech Challenge teams into the annual Invention Night with amazing results. The sixth and seventh grade teams pictured, along with the other participating teams, shared their Tech Challenge successes with the school community, combin- ing their work with that of students in grades K-8. SJV Tech Challenge teams took home the titles of “Best Team- work,” “Best Built from Scratch,” and “Most Inspiring.” On Invention & Tech Challenge Night, student scientists filled the parish gym with projects, inventions, and more. As members of the SJV community walked through each project, the students explained how and why they came up with their ideas, their scientific and engineering processes, and their always surprising test runs. SCHOOLS 17 Saint Leo the Great School Busy with May Day Activities May Day at Saint Leo the Great School began with a Mass celebration and a prayer service honoring Mother Mary. Also, May Day began a week of highlighting our school’s Fine Arts with a First Annual Art Show, a Spring Concert, a Book Fair, participation in the first Diocese of San Jose Young Authors Book Festival, and a Recycled Fashion Show put on by the third graders. A big thank you to Mrs. Criss-Harvey, Mrs. Somavia, Mrs. Ewell, Ms. Alvarez, Mrs. Caruso, Mrs. McInnis, Saint Victor School, and all of the volunteers! During the week of May 1, the students at Saint Leo showed the com- munity that they have many talents, including Fine Arts.
