CATHOLIC SCHOOLS tvc.dsj.org | April 4, 2017 21 Saint Frances Cabrini Students Support Pennies for Patients Service Project The eighth grade class of Saint Frances Cabrini and their teacher, Monique Tobbagi, led the school in the Student Series, “Pennies for Patients” Fundraiser, benefi ting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Inspired by Ms. Tobbagi’s sister, a Leukemia cancer survivor, the students brainstormed ways to raise money with the help of the Cabrini student, family, and staff communities. Classes held penny wars, eighth graders baked items for a school wide bake sale, and a $2 donation free dress day was held, all in an eff ort to raise money and help young kids battling these blood cancers within our community. Over the course of two weeks, the eighth grade class was able to raise more than $5,000, an amazing accom- plishment that could not have been done without the great support of this wonderful Saint Frances Cabrini School community. Holy Family Celebrates Grandparents’ Day Holy Family School welcomed over 200 grandparents on campus. We are so blessed to have had our grandparents attend school with their grandchildren. We began the day honoring all our grandparents in a touching prayer ser- vice. Our preschoolers, kindergarteners and fi rst graders showed off their sing- ing talents by sharing a song. There were definitely a lot of giggles and smiles from the grandparents. After the service, the grandchildren connected with their grandparents and showed them around the school. A tour of the classroom, introduction of their teachers and showing off the school grounds were among the few exciting events that grandparents shared with their precious grandchildren. They continued the day with a reception that included a performance by the second and third graders sharing what they each love about their grandma and grandpa. Of course, it would not be complete without ending the day with some sweet treats with our sweet grandparents. Saint Christopher Students Learn About Ohlone Tribe A long-standing tradition for the third graders at Saint Christopher School is a visit from Keith Gutierrez, an Ohlone expert, who travels around the Bay Area teaching students about the Native Americans who lived in our backyard. The students learn about our local Native Americans through hands-on activities, song and dance. During the 90-minute presentation, the students experienced how the Ohlone would grind acorns, hunt and gather. In addition to playing games and making face paint, some students assisted Gutier- rez in starting a fi re just like the Ohlone would. Gutierrez is widely popular at Saint Christopher School and they look forward to his visit year after year. BUSINESS DIRECTORY Resurrection School hosted a pasta dinner in part because of the generosity of the Italian- Catholic Federation Branch 408. Every year the group hosts a delicious Italian pasta dinner and donates proceeds to Resurrection School’s sixth Grade students to attend Science Camp. This year’s fi fth Grade class were servers at the dinner since next year they will be the lucky recipients of the proceeds raised.
