Use this formula to not only test a Sufi, but
also to recognise yourself
In order to explain how to recognise a true Sufi, His
Divine Eminence Gohar Shahi gives the following
example:
‘Only a thief will recognise a thief. Bring a thief
from Karachi and another from Rawalpindi. When
their eyes cross, they will recognise each other.
‘In a similar way, only a saint is spiritually
capable of recognising another saint of God.’
Before a question arises, HDE Gohar Shahi tells
us, ‘Only a saint will recognise a saint of God. This
is because you do not have the [required] criteria.’
When you attempt to judge whether or not
someone is a true Sufi, what do you look for?
Perhaps you want to know whether he is a
dedicated worshipper, whether he wears what you
consider to be a traditional Sufi outfit or whether
his lifestyle is a simple one. However, it is possible
for someone to fulfil these requirements, yet still
not be a true Sufi.
The issue is that saints of God are those
upon whom God showers his divine sparks
(theophanies). Only people who are recipients of
the divine sparks are able to recognise others that
have been granted the same luxury.
So for average people like us, it is impossible
to determine who is a true Sufi and who is an
imposter - right? Wrong.
The last section explained how the Spiritual
Heart is the most important factor for those
starting out on the spiritual path. It also described
how revival and enlightenment of the Spiritual
Heart are done through the method known as

How to Test Your
Spiritual Guide:
1) Ask him to revive your heart with God’s
name using the method of Opening of the
Spiritual Heart (Invocation of the Heart/
Dhikr-e-Qalb)
2) You should feel God’s name entering your
heart within seven days.
3) If after seven days, your Spiritual Heart
is not awakened and you have not felt God’s
name entering your heart, your Spiritual
Guide has not been appointed by God.
Opening of the Spiritual Heart, which can only be
attempted with the help of a divinely appointed
Spiritual Guide.
HDE Gohar Shahi said, ‘If somebody claims
to be a Sufi, he has to be appointed by God.
Otherwise, he is just an imposter. Secondly, if
he has been appointed by God, the only way
you can verify that truth is to beseech him to
grant you Opening of the Spiritual Heart. If he is
really appointed by God then he must have been
delegated by God to initiate hearts [with God’s
name].’

REPEAT the name of God three times.
Any name alluding to God is worthy of
respect, therefore it doesn’t really matter
which name of God you use.
FEEL the Name of God - You should feel
the name of God entering your heart. If
you do not feel this phenomenon within
seven days, simply say, ‘HDE Gohar
Shahi, help me.’
