The Trees Inside Our Brain | Page 21

Am I right-brained or left-brained? Anatomically speaking, your brain is divided into a left hemisphere and a right hemisphere. The two hemispheres are connected in the middle by a region called the corpus callosum. Although the brain is anatomically divided into two hemispheres, notions of being right or left brain dominant have no basis in science. Popular culture refers to analytical people as “left brained” and creative people as “right brained.” However, numerous research studies have demonstrated that there is no change in connectivity or activity, no enhancement of neurons, and no mysterious strengthening in either half of the brain for either type of person. The left half of the brain does not contain regions that are exclusively involved in analytical actions, and the right half of the brain does not contain regions that are specifically responsible for creative activities. Rather, the entire brain has semi–symmetrical regions that are involved in things like seeing, hearing, understanding, listening, speaking, balancing, and responding to what’s around us. Much of the brain is structured semi–symmetrically around understanding our environment and generating appropriate behaviors to interact with that environment. The bottom line is that regardless of whether you’re stronger in logical disciplines or creative disciplines, your whole brain is working with contributions from both hemispheres.
