YOUNG LAWYERS SHOWCASE KARA JOHNSON is an associate at Zuger Kirmis & Smith in Bismarck. Kara joined the firm in 2008. She is a civil litigation attorney who focuses her practice in the area of insurance defense litigation. She is licensed in North Dakota state and federal courts, Three Affiliated Tribes Tribal Court, the Standing Rock Sioux Nation Tribal Court and the Spirit Lake Tribal Court. Kara was born and raised in West Fargo. She received her B.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Minnesota in 2005. Kara received her J.D. with distinction from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2008. In law school, Kara participated in Moot Court, was a published member of the UND Law Review, was a finalist in UND’s mock trial competition and was a semi-finalist in a regional mock trial competition hosted by the American College of Trial Lawyers. For her strength in oral advocacy, Kara was inducted into The Order of Barristers. Kara currently is a member of Cabinet for the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division as the Editor of The Affiliate. She also serves as a member of the Resolutions Team and was previously a member of the Finance Board. From 2010-2012, Kara acted as the District Representative for North Dakota and South Dakota to the ABA YLD and wrote for The Affiliate. In addition to being actively involved with the ABA YLD, Kara is also a member of the Section of Litigation and TIPS. Within the State Bar Association of North Dakota, Kara serves as President-Elect of the Women Lawyers Section, the Chair of the Mentorship Task Force, and as a member of the SBAND Executive Director Search Committee. Kara is also on the Joint Attorney Standards Committee. Kara is the Secretary of the North Dakota Defense Lawyers Association.
