“ the best testament is that the staff adores him, the Board of Governors greatly respects him and the members feel uninhibited in calling him and asking for him advice. ” SBAND "has done great things for our members, for the judiciary and for the citizens of this state. He has been unique in his ability to lead lawyers, guide the Board of Governors and interact with the Supreme Court. He rarely takes credit for what he has done, choosing instead to lay success at the feet of the Board of Governors. That is the sign of a great leader." Hill believes SBAND today is much better for his leadership. "The role of Young Lawyers has been enhanced, the relationship with the Judiciary solidified, the partnership with the UND School of Law cemented, the stature of lawyers before the state legislature elevated, and the role of lawyers in providing legal services to the disadvantaged expanded." Although he says Neumann's accomplishments are many, Hill believes "the best testament is that the staff adores him, the Board of Governors greatly respects him and the members feel uninhibited in calling him and asking for his advice. He may be just 'Bill' to his friends, as he insists we call him, but he is a big presence in the lives of lawyers in this state. He deserves the thanks of a vibrant and professional Association for which he justifiably can take credit." Gail Hagerty, President of SBAND, said SBAND will recognize Neumann’s contributions during the Annual Meeting June 12 through 14 in Bismarck. Taking to the skies In his retirement, Neumann and his wife, Jackie, will remain in Bismarck, where their son, Andrew, practices law at the Fredrikson & Byron law firm. Their daughter, Emily, lives and works in Los Angeles. For the future, he says he may serve as a surrogate judge. And, having recently had his FAA medical certificate restored after 17 years, Neumann says he intends to renew his passion for flying and take to the skies in a small airplane as often as possible.
