A Message from the Chairman
I
n 1999, I was given a book titled “First, Break All
the Rules: What the World’s Greatest Managers Do
Differently.” I have never been a fan of trendy
management books, as I have found them to
have little sustaining impact, but I was assured this
book was different. Rather than trying to advance a new
theory, the book is based on empirical data collected in
more than 80,000 interviews of managers who have had
varying success in companies of all sizes across multiple
industries.
Very early in the
book, authors
Marcus Buckingham and Curt
Coffman set
forth the premise
that every
manager/leader
has four basic
responsibilities:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Select the right people.
Set the right expectations.
Train people to meet the expectations.
Motivate and inspire them to WANT
to meet those expectations.
The differentiation between great
and average managers is how well they
execute these responsibilities.
I found this compartmentalization of
the hundreds of tasks we face every day
brought elegant clarity to articulating our
roles. Since then, it is the filter through
which I run my assessment of our existing
leaders and I use it in my selection during
the interview process. Our performance
reviews and interview guides are built
around identifying individuals’ abilities
to excel in these roles. Our team member
surveys are designed around assessing
our collective performance in these areas.
At World Wide Wings, it is how we hold
ourselves accountable. It has become our
organization’s mantra.
During our annual FBS Business
Summit in October, we will be concentrating on selecting the right people.
At this, our 10th anniversary summit,
we will be presenting a slate of FBS board
of directors candidates for the members
to vote on. The slate being presented is
the work of our nominating committee,
which has worked for the past two
months to pull this team together. Their
work yielded an outstanding slate that
contains six returning board members
and four franchisees that have stepped up
and volunteered their time and talents to
support the entire franchise community.
I am very excited to be collaborating with
this talented group of individuals as we
work through an unprecedented number
of issues affecting us all at the state and
federal level.
Once our board is finalized, our focus
will then turn to setting expectations.
Our first course of action will be
defining the roles and responsibilities of
the FBS board members and establishing
our committee structures around education, advocacy and member services. If we
are to be successful, we have an expectation that all franchisees will support this
process in two ways.
Communicate: We can only fulfill
our mission to improve, preserve and
ensure the economic success of all
members if we are clear on the issues
facing you and your organizations.
Contact information for your FBS board
members is available on the Leadership
page of www.myfbsonline.org
Serve: Being a board member is only
one way to serve. The new FBS structure
will provide committee opportunities
designed to get more subject-matter
experts involved and we will be reaching
out to ask you to serve. The time commitment will vary based on the complexity
of the issue and the work to be done. It is
our sincere hope that you will find a way
to participate in making this organization
and our brand everything they have the
potential to be.
I hope you are enjoying our new
publication, The SCORE and the recognition and celebration of the great work
being done in the communities we serve,
such as honoring our military veterans
and holding a variety of fundraisers.
