Lainshaw Lollipop Lady Looks Forward to Retirement ryan di llon, p 6 at lai n shaw p ri m a ry dr e w th i s p i c tu r e of mr s b e l l at work marilyn bell, lollipop lady at lainshaw primary school, retires on the 23 rd of december coinciding with her 66 th birthday. Marilyn and her husband came to stewarton in 1972. At that time she was a primary teacher in Glasgow and the following year she began teaching in Dunlop Primary. Marilyn stopped teaching when their first child Cameron was born in 1976. Within 5 years daughters Mairi and Sine arrived. Marilyn didn’t return to teaching in favour of spending time with her children while they were young. When all their children were at school she began looking for something which would allow her to be with them during school holidays. In conversation with Sergeant Sherry, local police officer at that time, she was offered a post outside Lainshaw Primary School. Marilyn accepted and started her post in 1986. She is retiring at Christmas this year after safely crossing many children outside the school for almost 30 years! Marilyn has enjoyed getting to know the children and now crosses children of those she crossed in her early days in the job. One of her strengths has been getting to know the children and usually within a few weeks of a new intake can address each child by name. Marilyn also kindly spoke to primary 1’s about road safety and helped with such things as school sports days. However in recent years has undergone surgery for a cataract and rodent ulcer on her eyelid (possibly caused by exposure to sunlight over many years). It is now time for Marilyn and Douglas, who has been retired for 4 years, to enjoy their grandchildren and spend more time away with their caravan.
