1ST STEWARTON BOYS’ BRIGADE an update from captain willie campbell
Our Junior Section highlight
of the year was when we visited
Dunure Village Hall for a
weekend camp at the end of
April. The boys had a great time
where 20 boys and staff stayed in
the hall and kept ourselves busy
with visits to the park, the beach,
the rocks and the Castle. Boys
were kept busy, well fed and even
got a fair bit of sleep too.

On 15th March East Ayrshire Battalion
paraded in Stewarton. About 250 boys and
staff paraded to St. Columba’s Church where
both the congregations of John Knox and St
Columba’s were also in attendance. A great
Parade in good weather and as we arrived at
the Church we were greeted by an extremely
smart display of our Anchor Boy Guard of
Honour. As well as the Parade which comes to
Stewarton roughly every 10 years, we retired
our old Colours and Dedicated New Colours.
The old Colours we reckon have been in use in
the Company since early 1960’s.
We recently held our Annual Display and
Parents night where 200 guests enjoyed a
varied night of sketches, games, marching and
presentations. With nearly 100 boys and staff
on the floor it was a busy and enjoyable night
for all. Awards on the night were presented by
Janet Marshall who recently retired as an officer
in the Company. The final presentation was
by Kilmarnock Player Sammy Clingan who
presented the Queens Badges. Queens badges
are the highest award a boy can work for in the
Brigade, and congratulations go to Morgan
Ridley, Callum Reid and Ewan White.
After a busy session the Company is now
“taking it easy” with our summer programme
of events The Anchor boys will meet till mid
June on Wednesday nights where they will
have games nights and also visits to the park if
it is dry weather. The Juniors get to go to local
parks in Kilmarnock or Kilwinning and also a
wee visit to the Magnum. The Company and
Seniors will be taking the part in a summer
programme which includes go-karts, visit to
Timecapsule in Coatbridge, a barbeque and
football night and also a visit to the muddy
obstacle course in Fenwick. The Anchors
and Juniors will be going on a trip to Blair
Drummond Safari Park. We will also be
taking part in the Bonnet Guild festival this
year, with the Anchor Boys taking part in the
float and the Juniors, Company and Seniors
taking part in the Guard of Honour for the
Corsehill Queen. At the start of next session
the Company and Senior Section will be
running an adventure residential weekend to
Newcastleton in the Scottish borders. As I say...
taking it easy.
We would like to thank all parents and friends
of the Company who have helped make the
session another successful year and we are
already planning next sessions dates and
activities. A special thanks to the boys, quite
important to recognise the hard work and
commitment, with boys attending Parades and
fund raising events as part of their commitment
to the ongoing success of the Company.
