Dunlop Kirk is taking part in the
Ayrshire Doors Open on Sunday 7th
September from 1pm until 4pm. Teas
and coffees will be available and there
will be guides on hand to show you
around the church and churchyard.
Some Background information: The church
occupies an impressive site in a designated
outstanding conservation area of the village. It is
a lovely B listed building, dating from 1835 and
incorporating parts of an earlier church building
dated 1621. There are twentysix stained glass
windows and these are considered quite outstanding in a rural village church. Adjacent to the
church are two A listed buildings - the tomb of Hans Hamilton (the first post-Reformation
minister of Dunlop), and the Clandeboyes Hall (formerly the village school), which was built
to honour Hans Hamilton by one of his sons, Viscount Clandeboyes.
In 2008 the discovery of an extensive outbreak of dry rot in the church building and serious
defects in the exterior stonework meant that a restoration and refurbishment programme
costing £750,000 had to be undertaken over a four year period. During this time services
were held in the village hall and the church reopened in early 2013 with a fully Everyone is
welcome to join our morning services at 11.30am and the church is also open between the
hours of 2.00 and 4.00pm every Sunday afternoon from early May to the end of October.
Moira Redmond started her Keep Fit Class
in the Institute Hall in 1984. To mark its 30th
anniversary, it was decided to hold a 2 hour
Charity Work-out in May. 27 ladies participated
in the event and raised the amazing sum of £870,
which was split between Macmillan Nurses
and Stewarton Woodlands Action Trust. A
big thank-you to everyone who helped make it
such a success. The class is still going strong on
Monday nights at 8pm in the Area Centre and
includes Aerobics and conditioning work for
bums an tums. The new session begins on 19th
August and new members are very welcome.
