Stewarton ' s Swimming Starby Adam Lyon
here follows an amazing story of why disability should never stop you from enjoying what you do and achieving what you deserve . kathryn white is no ordinary 10-year-old girl . she has elhers danlos syndrome , which affects all muscles within the body and can sometimes make everyday life very difficult . however , this has never stopped kathryn and she has embraced life and all it ’ s activities with gusto and determination .
Despite her disability , Kathryn has a great passion and talent for swimming . The youngster joined the Jets Disabled Swimming Club when she was 7 years old , with the head coach soon realising that Kathryn had a talent in the pool . She has thrived at the Jets , as they focus on a person ’ s ability rather than the disability that they have . At the moment , Kathryn is competing at the highest possible level , meaning she is racing against teenagers and even adults . Kathryn recently won Ayrshire ’ s ‘ Disabled Athlete of the Year ’ award . This was presented to her in a ceremony at St Joseph ’ s Academy in Kilmarnock .
I asked Kathryn a few questions about her amazing talent , where it all came from , and her ambitions for the future . when did you first gain an interest in swimming ?
When I was 7 , I was on holiday in Portugal and I really enjoyed swimming in the pool all day .
when did you first realise that you had a talent for swimming ?
I joined Jets as I liked to swim , the coach told me I was really good .
what is your favourite and least favourite stroke ?
My favourite is the front crawl and least favourite is breast stroke . what was your reaction when you found out that you had won the ‘ disabled athlete of the year ’ award ?
Shocked and Emotional .
what has been your biggest achievement to date ?
My most recent regional swimming gala when I won 5 Golds and achieved 5 personal best times .
what is your ultimate ambition in swimming ?
To keep swimming at my best and if I am lucky enough to swim for Scotland or GB team .
Kathryn is the current National Disabled School Champion for 50m front crawl , 50m back stroke and 75m individual medley . As well as the Jets , Kathryn also swims with Kilmarnock Association Swimming Club . Kathryn is a true inspiration to us all , and I ’ m sure Stewarton will continue to support her for years to come .
