A NEW COMMUNITY BUS FOR STEWARTON

Stewarton & District Community Council are pleased to announce the acquisition of a brand new Community Bus , purchased with the assistance of a generous grant from the Renewable Energy Fund . The 16 seat bus is fully fitted with seat belts , 2 emergency exits , a wheelchair ramp and a factory fitted side step . It is ideal for both local and longer-distance trips , in particular to support youth and community groups and sports teams . The bus is available for self-drive hire by registered user organisations . FROM STEWARTON TO SOUTH AFRICA stewarton academy pupil christina ritchie is thrilled at the prospect of spending a year teaching primary school children in the ‘ rainbow nation ’

She is volunteering with Project Trust , a Scottish-based charity that helps teenagers challenge themselves , learn about the world and be a positive force within it . South Africa is a multi-ethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures . Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution ' s recognition of 11 official languages , which is among the highest number of any country in the world . Christina is currently in her last year of school and she says she is really enjoying it , studying for National 5s and Highers which she will sit in May . She will be helping teach children who haven ’ t had much education in subjects like English , maths and creative subjects like art and music .
She says ‘ this is an amazing opportunity to use the education and experience that I have received to help others .
‘ I ’ m looking forward to using my drama and acting skills to help engage children and make lessons more enjoyable .
‘ At the same time I hope to learn lots too and gain skills like selfconfidence and responsibility .’
Project Trust focuses on sending school leavers overseas for either an 8 or 12 month period to be part of projects in teaching , social care and outward bound in approximately 20 countries .
