FANCY A LADIES ’ DAY OUT AT THE RACES ... IN STEWARTON ?

STEWARTON DRAMA GROUP IN REHEARSAL FOR HIT COMEDY PLAY

Stewarton Drama Group are currently hard at work rehearsing for their forthcoming production of Amanda Whittington ’ s hit comedy ‘ Ladies ’ Day ’, which hits the stage of the town ’ s Area Centre at 7.30pm on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th March . SDG first performed this play in 2009 to great reviews from local audiences , and news that the group are staging this hilarious show again has already sparked a rush for tickets in the town ! Recently commended by national theatre critics as ‘ an exuberantly up-to-the-minute comedy ’, the play broke all box-office records when it was first performed professionally in 2005 by Hull Truck Theatre Company . When the curtain rises the audience soon see that work , life and love are just one long hard slog for fish factory workers Pearl ( Caren McLean ), Jan ( Denise McColl ), Shelley ( Alison Barr ) and Linda ( Laura Mundell ).
Friends together through the gills , the guts and the guys , these likely lasses ’ fortunes are set to change when Linda finds tickets to Ladies ' Day at Royal Ascot . After years of fish-filleting the pals are ready for a spot of filly-fancying , but the question is ... is Royal Ascot ready for them ? Out go the hairnets , overalls and wellies as the foursome bid farewell to factory supervisor , Joe ( Johnnie McPherson ), doll themselves up to the nines , don some eye boggling hats , and head off to the races for a drink , a flirt and a flutter . The foursome , who are themselves fish out of water , are absolutely determined to make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity to mix it with the aristocracy ... but it turns out that they spend more time mixing with dubious ticket tout , Fred ( Craig McLaughlan ), suicidal Irish jockey , Patrick ( Jim Goldie ), drunken punter , Kevin ( also played by Craig McLaughlan ), lost love , Barry ( David Robertson ) and sleazy tic-tac man , Jim ( also played by Johnnie McPherson ) - who bears an uncanny resemblance to Channel 4 racing pundit , John McCririck !
There are also some heart-tugging emotional scenes as each of the foursome reveals struggles , hopes and dreams that we can all identify with in some way . Director of the show , Nancy McPherson said :
“ Ladies Day ’ is a sparkling , contemporary comedy which offers adventures and startling revelations and most importantly is guaranteed to have the audience smiling from start to finish . You could say it ’ s a real winner in its field !
“ The perfect play for a ‘ girls night-out ’, and just as enjoyable for couples and families , it ’ s the ultimate feel-good show which really does have something for everyone .
“ So if you ’ re looking for an evening of wonderful entertainment , with a bundle of laughs along the way , this really is the show for you . Make sure you ’ re first past the winning post in the queue for tickets !”
Tickets for the production priced at £ 8.00 Each are on sale now at Stewarton Library or can be reserved by emailing the group at stewartondramagroup @ hotmail . co . uk
