It ’ s been almost 10 years since one of Stewarton ’ s favourite eateries opened and Dawn Borland , of Borland ’ s Delicatessen , more commonly known as ‘ The Baguette Shop ’, has been looking back over the last decade and talking about the success of the Deli .
Having opened the shop with her friend and then business partner Lyndsey Phillips in July 2006 , they then won the most promising new business award in 2008 and have since become one of the most well-known places to eat in Stewarton , where they are famed for their overfilled baguettes and friendly customer service .
Asked what the secret to their success is , Dawn puts it down to a number of reasons , including all the different members of staff who have been a part of the Deli over the years : “ Everyone works really hard to maintain high standard of customer service , which we see as a key aspect to our business and over the past 10 years we ’ ve had some fabulous people working with us .
“ We always try to provide great value for money and a quality service for our customers . The quality of our produce and our friendly customer service are the cornerstones of our business and part of the reason why we ’ ve lasted 10 years .”
She also says the Deli ’ s use and support of local produce remains something very important to them : “ Showcasing and supporting local produce is key to our business model . We use cheese from producers like Dunlop and the Arran producers as well as ingredients from Dalduff in Crosshill . I ’ d like to mention Little Doone ( balsamic dressing producers ) because they ’ re as old as we are , having started at the same time as us .”
Most importantly though , Dawn believes it ’ s because of the people of Stewarton and was keen to express her gratitude towards them : “ We would like to thank the fantastic people of Stewarton for their continued support of us , if it wasn ’ t for them we wouldn ’ t still be here . It ’ s really humbling to know that people talk about this Deli up in Glasgow , and that has to be down to the amazing customers who continue to come in and use us .”
She also had a special message for some of the most loyal customers she has had over the years , the school kids : “ I want to wish the sixth-formers at Stewarton Academy the best of luck in the future , as they ’ ll shortly be leaving school . They ’ re welcome to come back and visit me anytime !”
Asked what ’ s next for the Deli , Dawn says “ More of the same ! If it ain ’ t broke don ’ t fix it . The deli has evolved over the years but we don ’ t see the need for it to change anymore now .”
