Creating a Community crossfit has finally arrived in the bonnet town, with crossfit stewarton officially opening its doors to the public in january 2016. despite its rapidly increasing popularity, this fitness phenomenon still remains a mystery to many. so, what exactly is crossfit? I’ve been asked that question a lot recently, and I’m still not quite sure how to respond. Certainly, I could point out how the unique combinations of weightlifting, gymnastics and cardiovascular movements forge a well-balanced fitness capacity. I could talk about the constantly varied workouts that ensure no two days are the same. I could even explain how CrossFit now exists as a fully-fledged sport in its own right; with live television coverage, millions of dollars in prizemoney and numerous illustrious sponsorships. Yet despite this seemingly succinct definition, anybody currently working out at a CrossFit gym will know that something’s missing – something of the utmost importance. Community. CrossFit is all about community. At CrossFit Stewarton, we are fortunate enough to host an incredibly diverse fitness community. A small minority of our members have successfully dedicated themselves to competing in the sport of CrossFit. Yet on the other hand, we have new mums who are on a mission to reclaim their pre-baby bodies. We have office workers who combat their sedentary occupation through a fierce commitment to exercise. We have fitness fanatics who simply love to push their limits on a daily basis. We have competitive athletes, who use CrossFit to complement their sport specific training. And perhaps most importantly of all, we have those who train to retain strength and mobility as they age. All of these groups train for different reasons, yet form one community, and share one common goal; self-improvement. No matter the difference in age, gender or experience, all our members train together – and the last one to finish is always guaranteed the loudest cheer! Consider this; the needs of an elite athlete and those of an aging pensioner differ by degree, not by kind. One needs strength to hurl a javelin, and the other needs strength to carry shopping and safely navigate stairs. Does your gran need to train like an Olympian? No, but she would benefit from the increased bone density that results from resistance training, or postural improvements that ease her back pain. There is a widespread belief that lifting weights is dangerous. This couldn’t be further from the truth; being weak is dangerous. similarly, are you concerned that you’re too unfit to start crossfit? Newsflash; you’re not, so you’d better think of another excuse to stay on the couch. All of our workouts are led by a fully qualified coach, and class sizes are strictly limited to ensure an optimal learning environment. Our workout of the day is designed to illicit continuous progress in all aspects of fitness, including strength, endurance and power. These workouts are infinitely scalable, so can be tailored to accommodate a large variety of fitness abilities. what about women, can they do crossfit too? The answer to this is a resounding yes.
