The Papal Basilica of
Santa Maria Maggiore
Donato Tallo has some thoughts on a wonderful church
Like many
other churches in Rome and throughout the world, the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria
Maggiore is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Basilica is only a short walk from Rome’s Termini
Station, on the Esquiline Hill, and it is one of the four Papal Basilicas of Rome. It is both a spiritual jewel in
Rome’s crown and an architectural masterpiece.
As with the other Papal Basilicas in Rome, a Holy
Door at Santa Maria Maggiore is open for the Holy
Year of Mercy. On entry to the Basilica through the
Holy Door, pilgrims are greeted by a range of stunning
art work and sculptures throughout the interior, an
impressive baldacchino, beautiful Papal altar and
ancient yet strong marble columns in the nave.
