Ensuring all new workers are familiar with health and safety
arrangements on your construction site is critical, but young workers
in particular require special treatment.
Workers aged 15 to 25 have a 75 per cent greater chance of being
hurt, and in NSW 15 people in this age group are injured every day,
with building sites one of the highest-risk workplaces. Typical
injuries include cuts, lacerations, bruises, contusions, punctures
and fractures.
Young construction workers are also more likely to experience
manual handling injuries, such as sprains, strains and tears, from
incorrect lifting or moving heavy or awkward objects. Falls from
height are another major risk and building sites usually have
numerous pitfalls such as ladders, floor openings, roofs, scaffolds
and stairs.

New South Wales association members held the view that
a national conference should be implemented in Australia,
particularly with similar national conferences proving to be
so successful in many other parts of the world. The New
South Wales association believed that the agenda for the
conference should not be limited to labour problems, but
should be open to trade practice and customs to benefit the
wider Australian painting industry.
The Victorian branch of Master Painters was very
enthusiastic, backing the idea of a national conference
to the fullest. South Australia Master Painters were also
enthusiastic, with their Secretary Mr Wagstaff suggesting
that the conference should be an annual fixture, attended
by two delegates from each state, with New South Wales
(as the senior state) responsible for making preliminary
arrangements.
When the first national Master Painters conference opened
in May 1913, the delegates present were: James Perrott
and, E. Quartly (NSW); J.G Wagstaff and A. Bland (SA); J.W
Clarebrough, T.H Colenso and J.C Beeler (VIC); J.S Maxell
and R.S Exton (QLD); and B.J Grice (NSW) who was elected
President.
