Sixth Form

Settling In
The Sixth Form have wasted no time in settling into the new school term , with a very hard working , enthusiastic new Year 12 cohort fitting in well with our Year 13 students .
To help Year 12 make a successful start to their Sixth Form studies , we have run an Information Evening as well as an ongoing subject mentoring programme .
The Year 12 Information Evening
On September 20th , the Year 12 Information Evening took place . The idea was for parents and students from Year 12 to receive information that will help students to settle successfully into Sixth Form work and life . A number of Year 13 students spoke and offered their experiences of Year 12 and what they would like to have known when they began in Year 12 . A film created by Ellie Cooper ( Year 13 ) was also shown which involved Year 13 students talking about the Sixth Form . Feedback was really positive about the evening and it was very well attended .
The Sixth Form Subject Mentoring Scheme
Year 13 students have been volunteering to meet after school with Year 12 students who take the same subjects as them , so that they can offer advice on how to be successful academically . These after-school events have been an opportunity for the two year groups to mingle as well as for support to be offered and for links to be established .
These meetings will be continuing throughout the Autumn Term .
UCAS ( University and College Admissions Service )
Year 13 students are now in the process of applying for university . Many students attend the Friday night UCAS help sessions to work on perfecting their personal statements before submitting applications .
Apprenticeships
A programme of opportunities is offered to students who want to apply for further training and education instead of going to university . So far , the students have received a number of well-informed visitors . ‘ Ideas 4 Careers ’ representative , Michelle Powell explored , over 2 sessions , a number of career routes including ; apprenticeships , non-traditional routes into university , entrepreneurial options , volunteering and gap years . Sam Artingstoll , an ex-student who left 4 years ago to take up an apprenticeship with Boots , came in last week to talk about the Boots apprenticeship schemes .
Other Visitors to School
Each Tuesday during Tutor Time , we invite organisations to share their knowledge and expertise on subjects which we think are informative , and sometimes essential , for young people to be aware of . This term some of our Year 13s wanting to progress to university received a talk from the Student Finance Organisation informing them on how funding through university works . We have also had student liaison representatives from The University of Nottingham visit and deliver supportive presentations to Year 13 regarding writing personal statements for UCAS applications , as well as talking to Year 12 students about the study skills necessary for success at A level and beyond . We have also had advisors from the National Citizenship Service and a session on using the school library effectively . This week we have the Anthony Nolan Trust in , talking about Blood and Bone Marrow donations along with The Nottinghamshire Road Safety group working with our Year 13s .
Trips Out
We have had a number of Year 12 and 13 students out on trips already this term . Year 12 and 13 Silver Duke of Edinburgh expeditions have taken place over 2 weekends in Derbyshire . There are many more trips planned for this year which will continue to enrich the experience our Sixth Formers gain from their time with us . Oliver Marshall in Year 13 wrote this about his recent DofE experience ;
“ Over the course of 3 days , the Year 12 and 13 group managed to walk just over 50km . Over the 3 days , our navigation skills developed greatly and we all learnt how to work together in difficult terrain or when we were lost , which for my group was quite often ! Overall D of E expeditions are great because you get the opportunity to develop strong friendships and , when it ’ s not raining , the views are stunning and rewarding !”
Open Evenings : Year 5 & 6 and Sixth Form
As well as settling down to some hard work , Sixth Form students have supported two important Open Evening events and we are very grateful for this . Some students took on the role of tour guides whilst others supported departments with subject specific understanding . Meanwhile , at the Sixth Form Open Evening , our Head Boy and Girl , along with the Deputies and other Year 13 volunteers , spoke about their experiences in the Sixth Form to a hall full of parents . All of those who took part in both events were a credit to the Sixth Form and the fact they spoke so confidently is really awe inspiring , as well as very promising as they head towards interviews with potential employers and Higher Educational staff .
