Roald Dahl’s 100th Birthday was celebrated in the LRC on Tuesday 13 September. Hosted by Willie Wonka and an Oompa Lumpa, students read stories and created their own bookmarks and cards. National Poetry Day National Poetry Day was celebrated a day early with a Lunchtime Poetry Slam in the LRC. The theme was messages, and students were asked to write a short ditty and perform against each other for small prizes. Here’s a ditty written by one of our winners, Grace Whittamore. ‘I’m sure a ghost is here to scare, I calm myself, there is nothing there. But what if there are evil horse-riders and an army of advancing spiders?’ LRC Year 7 and Year 8 students have all taken a STAR reading test and are now reading and quizzing as much as they can. Top 5 Year 7 students so far this term are: Esther Blount. Jessica Morley, Felix Orme, Kirsty Collins and Lucy Wilsher. Top 5 Year 8s are: Millie-Anna Hurrell, Ben Heysmond, Daisy Craven, Lucy Marriott and Maisie Woolis. Keep Reading and Quizzing! www.bookbuzz.org.uk The Kimberley School is giving all Year 8 students the opportunity to choose a free book as part of the Bookbuzz scheme. We eagerly await the arrival of the books sometime after Half Term. The aim of Bookbuzz is to inspire excitement about reading and discovering new books and authors. We hope all our Year 8s enjoy their Bookbuzz book and that it encourages them to continue reading. To find out more about this year’s titles, and other good books, do visit the Bookbuzz website where you can also find useful links about reading and writing. News Pastoral Literacy News: ERIC is gone, DEAR is here! During tutor time for the last couple of years, students have been involved in “ERIC” sessions, which stands for everyone reads in class. What is DEAR? DEAR stands for Drop Everything And Read. It will be a purposeful reading session taking place during tutor time. Everyone will take part in DEAR, including tutors. Bring in your book and use this time wisely! Readathon The Kimberley School is taking part in Readathon, the UK’s biggest sponsored reading challenge. We are asking students to take part to help us raise as much money as possible for UK children’s hospitals. Students have set themselves a target about how much they are going to read and have been sponsored to achieve this target. If everyone aimed to raise at least £1 in sponsorship, we would raise £1302 as a school… and we know you can do better than that! Think about the difference this could make to the lives of children in UK hospitals around the country. The deadline for sponsor forms is 18th October, so get reading! The following students have been selected by their House Performance Leaders for their outstanding attitude towards the Readathon campaign: Ella Foster (Boot) is reading The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins Kyla Wilson (Clough) is reading Maximum Ride Forever by James Patterson Eloise Stimson (Nightingale) is reading Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl Josh Wakelin (Lawrence) is reading The Rise of Nine by Pittacus Lore
