ENGLISH NEWS GCSE Revision Books The English Faculty recommend the following revision books to help GCSE students succeed in their GCSE English exam: These revision books can be bought from any member of the English Faculty at a cost of £3.00. There are many useful websites to help with revision too. Last year, our GCSE students found www.mrbruff.com useful as it contains video clips, podcasts and links to useful ebooks. The English Department is proud to announce that we have an award winning poet in our midst. Harry Holmes, Year 8, came 3rd in a DH. Lawrence poetry competition (under 18) organised by Nottingham University and the DH. Lawrence Heritage Centre. The judges commented that the poem was “powerfully original,” and we agree! Well done, Harry. NATURE The Sun sprints through the atmosphere, running across harsh plains of the sky, But as she runs, an inferno lion, she catches the clouds’ eerie eyes. The Moon frees the clouds from their kennels of darkness, letting them chase. “Let the hunt begin!” menacing Moon cackles to hypocritical Haze. A manipulative character is Haze; she weaves through the living as they talk, Casting illusions for unwanted guests, she paces through the air like a heroic hawk! But… as Haze tries to save the smouldering Sun, She meets the Sea- the Sky’s son. The Sea is a one-way train; it either helps you or washes you away to unknown beaches, The worst fate’s when he decides to release God’s forgotten creatures. But Sea always has a soft spot for the Sun, Making him appealing is what she has always done. “Yes, I will help you,” he roars. His seaweed eyes peel his Eagle-like vision to the sky. “First to save Sun we should find my mother,” sea bellows, his eyes eagerly looking up high. He shouts loudly some words Haze can’t understand, Then BANG! Suddenly they are isolated in an unknown land. Looming in front of them stands Sky, an ancient woman made of thick air, Sky peers into Haze, a robot scanning every hair. “I will help you,” she utters as if knowing their question, “For I am growing ancient, I have to mention.” So Haze, Sea and Sky unite to save Sun from Moon and the Clouds. Haze and Sea distract Moon and Clouds with powers of illusion - forces of nature as shrouds. Sky turns her atmosphere to blistering bright, Moon and the Clouds run like cats, as it’s the end of the night! The Sun sprints through the atmosphere, running across the harsh plains of the sky… By Harry Holmes
