h Duke of Edinburgh Many congratulations to 27 of our students who have completed their Bronze and Silver Awards throughout the current academic year. All students have represented the school excellently through completion of their expedition, volunteering, physical and skill sections and have achieved their awards through demonstrating high levels of independence and determination. Students successfully completed walks in the Peak District in summer 2015. Currently, the Year 10 students have started their Bronze Awards in Hall 2 on a Wednesday after school, Year 11s have started their Silver Awards this term and through the Sixth Form enrichment programme, students are completing the Silver Award along with a Sports Leadership Level 3 qualification and a group of Year 12 students have now started their Gold Awards. If you’re interested in completing your Duke of Edinburgh Award, speak to Mr Clark in the PE Department and Miss Barton in the Science Department. EPQ Results h Hair Donation On the 17th August 2015, I decided to get my hair cut. I wasn’t sure whether to donate it to charity but, in January 2016 I decided that I would donate it. Me and my parent, Tina, went on the internet to search for a charity that accepted hair donations. And we found one!! It was called The Little Princess Trust. The Little Princess Trust is a charity that makes real hair wigs for children who are diagnosed with cancer. Anyway we had to print out a form, which had information like inserting your name, email address and asking if you want a certificate. I said ‘yes’ to having a certificate and they sent me the certificate via email so that I could print off my own copy of it. Donating hair to people with cancer is a great achievement. You are basically making someone’s life so much better. It is a very good feeling. By Michelle Cordon h Catering News Cashless Catering: I would like to make you aware that from the start of the next autumn term (September 2016), students will no longer be able to top up catering accounts using the machines in the dining room. All dinner money should now be paid online using your sQuid account. Letters are available from the dining room. Cash will no longer be accepted. Of Mice and Men Theatre Royal Farewell to our Chef Manager: Sara Burton has been working as Chef Manager at The Kimberley School for the past 3 years. She has introduced lots of great new ideas to the area and will be sorely missed by all. Sara stated that she has, “loved working at The Kimberley School and will miss both the staff and the students”. We will be sad to see her leave and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavours! Design & Technology Appeal The D&T Faculty is in need of the following materials: - Empty Celebration, Hero, Quality Street biscuit tins etc. - Wool and fabric. - Unwanted pillow cases for our dress a girl/boy around the world to make dresses and shorts. A big thank you for previous donations; they have been very useful! Two of our Sixth Form students, Simran Basra and Charlotte Winter, who have studied the Extended Project Qualification have achieved really excellent results. The results, published this month by the AQA exam board, show that both achieved grade A. At The Kimberley School, the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is undertaken on a voluntary basis and involves the Year 12/13 students choosing an area of study, researching it and then structuring and writing a 5,000 word essay. While the qualification helps establish independent research skills, support is provided by teachers who are interested in the area of study chosen by the student. Together they spend time discussing the project and the themes within it. This means that students can develop a deeper understanding of a specific area of their interest well beyond the confines of the ‘A’ level specification. As an additional bonus, the qualification also counts as an ‘AS’ level, adding to the student’s ability to prove their interest in a topic to universities and employers. Mrs Stoddart h On 2nd March, thirteen Year 11 students spent an afternoon at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham, watching Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s production of Of Mice and Men. The novella, by John Steinbeck, is studied as one of the GCSE English Literature exam texts. Seeing it on stage brought the story to life for the students, and, hopefully, will help them to write more effectively and confidently in their exam. The production was very much enjoyed by our students, who were a credit to the school. For some, it was their first experience of a formal theatre production but, hopefully, not the last. Mrs McKinnon
