In what started out as an idea by Paul McCartney for an Edwardian military band, with the fictitious Sgt.Pepper leading the show, this album turned out to be probably the worlds first "concept"album..

Sessions for it began in November 1966 with 2 songs written and inspired from their Liverpool upbringing, but, EMI put pressure on them and they were released as a double A sided single and were eventually left off the album but later appeared on Magical Mystery Tour.

So with Paul's idea of a show he planned to have the entire album under the guise of the band Sgt.Pepper and then introduce artists within the band.

So with the title track "Sgt.Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" McCartney acts as an MC and at the end of it introduces Billy Shears {Ringo} to sing "With A Little Help From My Friends".

Sadly the concept loses it's impetus after this but the rest of the album is made up of extraordinary songs and music.

Despite suspicion that the song "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was a song about LSD it was in fact inspired from a drawing done by his son Julian and the inspiration for the songs' atmosphere was from a chapter in the Lewis Caroll novel Through The Looking Glass.

McCartney drew inspiration for the song "Fixing A Hole" from his work on the restoration of his Scottish farmhouse.

An article in The Daily Mail about teenage runaways led to McCartney writing the song "She's Leaving Home" and tells of a young woman leaving the clutches of her selfish yet well-meaning parents.
