Pellinec

Begun in 1997, this is an ambitious and extraordinary project, divided into many contrasting gardens, with the over-riding theme of ‘harmony in diversity’. The Exotic Garden, closest to the manor-house, contains the earliest planting, including many palms and an enormous blue agave of which Monsieur Gérard is justifiably proud. There is a paved Australasian Garden bursting with unusual plants; a meadow with thirty different varieties of magnolia; an English Garden with a Rhododendron Walk; and a Japanese Iris Garden, which is explored on board-walks and approached over a simple, but lovely, bright blue bridge. At the foot of the garden, a water-lily pond and Marsh Garden overlook Pellinec Bay. Monsieur Gérard is immensely knowledgeable and is constantly adding to his unique creation, doing most of the work himself. Visitors arriving on Sunday morning will be treated to a guided tour with Monsieur Gérard, whose labours were awarded the official title ’Jardin Remarquable’ in October 2012.

The Garden of Pellinec is not widely advertised. The owner, Monsieur Jean Gérard, prefers it this way. Follow signs to Côtes des Ajoncs from Penvénan and eventually all will be revealed, in a heavily wooded dip on a tiny lane, at the end of a long drive behind stone pillars and an iron gate!
