Junior Team Members to Receive Palmer Cup Exemption
T
he Connecticut State Golf Association
has announced that players selected to
the State Junior Team that represents
Connecticut and the CSGA in the New England
Junior Championship will be exempted into the
following year’s Russell C. Palmer Cup.
The New England Junior is a 54-hole
team and individual stroke play tournament
that includes seven-player squads from each
of the New England States. The site of the
Championship rotates throughout New England
each year. The Palmer Cup is the CSGA’s annual
men’s stroke play championship played at the
Country Club of Waterbury.
“Our Competitions Committee recognizes
that it is a unique achievement to be selected to
represent the CSGA and the State of Connecticut
in the New England Junior Championship,” said
CSGA Executive Director, Mike Moraghan. ”It is
appropriate to reward these outstanding young
golfers with entry into our stroke play major. In
that these players are also still in school during
Palmer Cup qualifying makes it difficult for many
to enter. In taking this action, we have further
elevated the importance of the Junior Team and
also strengthened the Palmer Cup field.”
After winning the 2012 Championship by a
record 29 strokes, Connecticut finished runnerup to Massachusetts in 2013. Brian Carlson
of Madison and Clinton Country Club won the
individual title in both 2012 and 2013.
The winner and runner-up in the CSGA
Junior Championship are automatic selections
to Connecticut’s Junior Team. Five additional
players are chosen by the CSGA Junior Golf
Committee. Players who have not reached their
18th birthday at the time of the New England
Junior Championship are eligible for selection.
