Around the State: News & Notes
The Connecticut Women’s Golf Association announced a new
pilot program that will debut this summer and is directed at girls ages 19-22. The
Extended Junior Membership is designed to provide competitive golf opportunities
for girls who are no longer eligible to take part in junior golf programs. Participants
in the program would compete against other extended junior members in a separate
division during selected CWGA one-day events. For more information and complete
schedule, visit www.cwga.org and click on Jr. Golf.
Hop Meadow Country Club (Simsbury) announced Joe Cordani, Jr.
as the new Head Golf Professional of the club. As a 22 year PGA professional,
Joe will provide traditional golf activities and private lessons but also intends
to expand the offering to accommodate the diverse needs of today’s country
club member. “When I was growing up, the game of golf was an all day
commitment,” Cordani said. “That doesn’t work in today’s society. People
want flexibility to play a few holes or a full round and require offerings that
include the entire family. That’s the trend and we’ll have programs to reflect
that.”
According to Club President, Peter Zummo. “We are very excited to
have Joe join our team. He’s a hometown guy with an outstanding record
of accomplishments. We’re confident he will continue our strong tradition of
teaching and enhance our family-oriented culture,” Zummo says.
Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course (Fairfield) will host it’s 78th
Annual One Day Tournament on May 18th, 2014. The tournament is open
to all golfers carrying a USGA handicap, and will feature both Gross and
Net divisions, with prizes awarded to top finishers. The tournament is
one of the oldest such events in the state, and dates back to 1936. The
tournament continues to be a fundraising effort for the club, helping to
promote the game of golf in the Fairfield area. For more information on
the event, contact the Golf Shop at (203) 373-5911.
Tamarack Country Club
(Greenwich) which
opened for play in 1929, is celebrating is 85th anniversary
this year. The course, designed by noted Golden Age
Architect Charles Banks and widely regarded as one of the
premier clubs in the region, is one of only a handful of
original Banks designs. Tamarack has hosted many of the
area’s top amateur Championships, including the MGA’s
Ike Championship during its formative years from 1953 to
1962.
As one of eight distinguished golf clubs in Greenwich,
Tamarack long has been viewed as the club that was content
to underplay its pedigree and stature as one of the area’s
finest examples of classic golf course architecture.
“While the moniker ‘hidden gem’ may sound somewhat pedestrian today, it is true that Tamarack
has been just that,” said president Jeff Young.
