The sixteenth Women’s Open Championship heads to Wampanoag Country Club, the 2012 CSGA Distinguished Club of the Year and a course full of history and tradition. 16th Connecticut Women’s Open Championship F May 27th - 28th, 2014 or just the second time in the sixteen year history of the Connecticut Women’s Open Championship, Wampanoag Country Club will play host to the region’s top female amateur and professional golfers on May 27th and 28th. The event is the CSGA’s only major championship that is open to any non-resident of Connecticut. Wampanoag Country Club is no stranger to hosting the state’s premier championships, having previously hosted six Connecticut Open Championships (132, 1937, 1940, 1950, 1968 and 1980) and six Connecticut Amateur Championships (1930, 1939, 1963, 1973 1982 and 2003). The club was originally founded in 1924 and shortly thereafter, famed architect Donald Ross was commissioned to design the championship layout. Ross, best known for his simplistic designs and holes that are carved out of the existing natural landscape, designed a course that has truly withstood the test of time. Most recently, it hosted the Connecticut Women’s Open in 2005, where Liz (Janangelo) Caron captured her third straight Women’s Open title on her home course. Caron, now a full-time teaching professional at the Golf Club of Purchase, is sure to be among the favorites to capture her fifth Women’s Open title when she returns to the course she grew up at. Caron shared the overnight lead at last year’s Women’s Open after firing a round of three under-par 69, but faltered in the second round and finished in ninth place. 2013 Champion Megan Khang, who won her second consecutive Women’s Open title at Tumble Brook Country Club last year, will not be returning to defend her title. Khang will be competing in Sectional Qualifying for the 2014 United States Women’s Open Championship at Thorney Lea Golf Club in Brockton, Mass. Khang previously qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open in 2012 and is currently the top-ranked junior in the National Polo Junior Golf Rankings. » Click here for complete coverage Connecticut State Golf Association 21
