Shelly Guyer A lthough he may have caught the golf bug later than most, Shelly Guyer has enjoyed the game since he started as if he had played it all his life. And from the time when the Detroit native began volunteering with the CSGA, he has always been an enthusiastic and well liked member of the association. From humble beginnings as a CSGA club rep for Oak Hills Park Golf Club to becoming the Treasurer of the CSGA and member of the Executive Committee, Shelly has become a great asset to Connecticut Golf. How did you get started with the CGSA? When I joined the men’s association at Oak Hills Park, I went to the first meeting and the President said, “We need a CSGA rep,” and they immediately voted me to that position, but I had no idea what that meant. Shortly after that, they had a CSGA regional representative meeting at Woodway, and we talked about the representative program, volunteering for tournaments, and other things involved with the position, and that’s how I got my start with the CSGA. Have you played golf your whole life? I have not. I started playing golf about 20 years ago. When I got married, my boss at the time bought both my wife and I starter golf club sets as our wedding present. I was living in Norwalk at the time and I started coming to Oak Hills just to try playing and I have been playing there ever since. What are your hobbies outside of golf? Well, I really enjoy watching movies, and do like to read a lot. But I only read novels; I don’t read anything real life, strictly fiction. What are your favorite tournaments to work each year? My favorite tournaments to work are the Amateur and the Junior Amateur because my favorite part of officiating is being a referee during match play. You’re in a whole 18 hole match with somebody, and for me it’s the most exciting part of officiating because you have to be on the ball for every shot. Article by Chris Austin, CSGA P.J.
