With Weigold leading the way, Torrington’s members quickly embraced the State Open. Husband and wife team Adrian and Maggie Selby built a billboard advertising the Open, and planted it along Route 4 left of the 14th hole. Retired schoolteacher Bud Pepin stepped up as head of Torrington’s volunteers, and well before the ?rst round was underway, Pepin had amassed close to ninety volunteers who were ready to work and excited to be part of the championship. Torrington members drove shuttle vans, worked as walking scorers and spotters, manned leaderboards, re?lled water bottle stations, and greeted spectators who arrived to watch Connecticut’s best amateur and professional golfers. When all was said and done, players like Watertown’s Ian Marshall called it “an amazing job,” and Dick Weigold re?ected that he’d never seen his fellow members feeling greater pride in their club. “It was a great experience,” said Weigold, “our members absolutely loved it, and I know the players loved it, too.” Pictured Above: 1974 Connecticut Amateur Champion and ninetime Torrington Club Champion Dick Weigold (Left), led the effort along with Bud Pepin (center) to recruit nearly 90 volunteers to support the Connecticut Open operation.
