Connecticut Players Shine at New England Amateur

On July 16th - 18th , twenty six of Connecticut ’ s top amateur golfers traveled to Green Mountain National in Killington , Vermont for the 84th New England Amateur Championship . Playing less than an hour from his home on a course he has played so many times before , Evan Russell ( CC of Vermont - VT ) played exceptional golf and captured the title with a 54-hole score of 5-under par 208 . It marks only the third time in New England Amateur Championship history that a Vermont player has won the title . Russell follows in the footsteps of Shawn Baker ( 1989 ) and Hans Albertson ( 1990 ).
Finishing just three shots behind Russell was Zach Zaback of TPC River Highlands , who was the low Connecticut Player in the championship . Zaback fired rounds of 67-74-70--211 to finish alone in third place . Zaback began his final round seven shots behind the leader , but started with birdies on three of his first five holes ,. After eight holes , he stood three shots back at 4-under par . However , Zaback made a pair of costly bogies on Holes # 9 and # 17 , and was unable to mount a comeback .
Zaback ’ s finish was an impressive one , marking the fourth consecutive year that a Connecticut player has finished in the Top 3 . Also finishing in the top 10 was Brian Carlson of Clinton Country Club , who shot rounds of 67-75-71 to finish tied for sixth place .
The New England Amateur Championship is open to amateur golfers who hold membership in a club belonging to one of the six New England State Golf Associations and have an upto-date USGA / GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4 . Christopher Swift of Great River Golf Club was the last Connecticut player to capture the title , winning last year at Falmouth Country Club by five shots .
