You Never Know By Al Keith Three weeks have gone by and John has not found the right woman who can play the role of a prostitute. In a city like Los Angeles where there is an abundance of beautiful actresses willing and ready to jump at the opportunity for acting roles, John has raised the bar. He needs convincing. He needs a real prostitute, a whore who talks the talk, knows the talk of the street and how it flows. Not some wannabe. And that is all he’s been running into. All the women that he has auditioned have flunked his test, and he’s basing all this on personal experience. John has been working for The Bigwish Casting Co. for 5 years as an assistant to an assistant. Though he is a glorified lap dog, he has learned a lot about casting in that time and has helped out tremendously on character casting tips, which his boss has noticed on more than one occasion. But John is still looked upon as no more than a loyal assistant, which he is getting tired of. He feels he is ready for the next level and John has been bugging his boss to give him a movie, to let him be the director of casting. Well, after hearing John nearly beg, plead and almost steal, his boss caved in and gave him his first opportunity as casting director of a small independent film. The corner of Windward Ave. and Pacific Ave. in Venice Beach is about as good as it can get to see women. John is sitting outside at Café Collage watching the world go by and he is optically searching every woman that walks by. John has decided to take an unconventional approach of finding his lady as he watches just about every type of woman; some are big, some are bigger and he has to laugh a couple times because… why do big women want to wear little cloths? Then he noticed a size zero, the too thin to win club and the surfer girls and finally the stars. The ones who just know they are fine, God’s gift to beauty itself because they’ve been brainwashed. From birth they’ve been told over and over, “You’re so cute” or “You’re pretty” or “Oh look at you? You’re so beautiful.” But can they act? That’s all he cares about. Can they act? Across the street, John sees a woman getting off the bus. He watches her as she stands at the corner waiting for the light to change. He likes the way she walks. He visualizes her in heels; the 4 to 6 inch heels. He notices she has a nice body under her denim outfit. Her height is just right and her hair is perfectly dark. He does not want a blonde and this woman is hitting all the right points, right now. As she crosses the street John can really see her now and she is becoming more beautiful the closer she gets. He watches her walk into the café. Watching her through the window looking at the menu, John is wondering if she is from L.A. or visiting. He can’t wait to talk to her. He keeps an eye on her as she places her order. John is fascinated now. She is remarkably beautiful. 52 THE CONE - ISSUE #5 - SUMMER 2015
