Of Special Services West Platte Education Foundation In a time when the news is filled with stories about schools closing early and districts facing financial calamity, we are fortunate to live in a community whose school district sits on a solid financial foundation. Even with the $20 million capital improvements project now underway, most of West Platte’s basic academic needs can be addressed using available district funds. Yet there are some things for which these public funds cannot be used, such as college scholarships to reward high-performing seniors, personal school supplies for talented but financially-challenged students, grants for certain types of creative “out of the box” learning experiences, and other forms of intellectual stimulation that can add significant value to the West Platte academic experience. WEST PLATTE SCHOOL DISTRICT For individual students, these “value added” experiences can potentially make the difference between a good education and a superior education. Our goal is to set the bar of academic excellence high, to challenge students to exceed their academic expectations, and to offer students opportunities to expand their intellectual worlds. The West Platte Education Foundation was recently formed to address the desire to create this “value added” educational experience for students and teachers at West Platte. The foundation is a private, notfor-profit, tax exempt, 501(c)(3) organization whose purpose is to promote and facilitate educational excellence in our school district. Last spring, the Foundation awarded its first college scholarship to high school senior 1103 WASHINGTON STREET Chelsea Englis who is attending Northwest Missouri State University this fall. By necessity the foundation’s initiatives will be limited while we work to build a solid financial endowment through gifts from the community, from West Platte alums, from area businesses and corporations, and from other sources that believe in our goal of providing superior educational opportunities for our students.
