Elementary Extracurricular Activities

You cannot educate a child solely by teaching him/her academic subjects such as math and science. There's more to education than that. That's where extracurricular activities come in. They allow your child to grow. They allow students to be stimulated by new ideas and ways of thinking. They give a sense of accomplishment and encourage collaboration. These are all excellent lessons needed in order to be a successful student.

West Platte Elementary offers the following opportunities for students to be involved in extracurricular activities:

Elementary Book Club—Through a partnership with the Weston Branch of the Mid-Continent Public Library, two fantastic book clubs have been created. Books are chosen by the sponsors with student input and then posted for students prior to the meetings. Students meet to discuss the characters, plot, and setting, as well as opinions of the book. Students who are in 2nd through 6th grade may participate in the Book Club.

Chorale—Chorale is an elementary choir made up of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who enjoy singing, learning more about music and performing. Choral performs multiple times during the year not only to teach participants about performing, but also to share the student’s talent with the Weston community and beyond.

Green Club—Green Club focuses on educating our students on ways to take care of the environment. Students in grades 2 through 6 learn to love and appreciate the Earth we live on by understanding how to keep it healthy and reuse what we already have. Green Club participates in a volunteer “save the planet” activity each year.

Character Council—Character Council provides students in grades 3 through 6 an opportunity to provide leadership, promote school spirit, and encourage community service. Students are nominated by their teacher or classmates to serve on Character Council based on behaviors that reflect the monthly character trait. The Character Council is responsible for the next month’s Character Education Celebration Assembly.

Girls on the Run—Girls on the Run (GOTR) is an after school program that uses the power of running to help prepare girls in 3rd through 6th for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. GOTR can also be thought of as Can University—a place where girls learn that they can. No limits. No constraints. Only opportunities to be remarkable. Participants perform a community service project each season and also participate in a 5K at the end of the season.

Destination Imagination—The purpose of Destination Imagination is to inspire and equip pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. There are seven standards that participants can choose from to compete in academic tournaments. Students are challenged to present solutions to identified challenges while having fun and gaining confidence in their ability to use 21st century skills to build on their unique strengths.
