The Geisha facial uses the excrements of the Nightingale bird…yes, excrements…like in BIRD POOP! In Japan it is known as Uguisu-no-Fun and was originally introduced to the Japanese from the Koreans during the Heian Period, 794-1185. It stripped dyes from fabric to create beautiful patterns on clothing. Later, Geisha and Kabuki entertainers wore a heavy white makeup consisting primarily of lead and zinc. As one can imagine the lead/zinc based make up caused skin damage and disease. It was discovered that using Uguisu-no-Fun would completely remove the heavy make-up and brighten, heal and retexturize the skin. It then found its place among Buddhist monks who used it to clean and polish their bald scalps. Uguisu-no-Fun has been used for centuries with first written documentation of its use as a facial treatment in 1933.

So where does this bizarre beauty treatment come from? Poop. Bird Poop.
