section update Sole Practitioner/Small Firm Section By James Attwood The Attwood Firm, LLC [email protected] O n May 21, the Section is hosting a social event at the Braves game. We have purchased 40 tickets in Section 215 of the Terrace Infield. Normally a $53 ticket, the cost is only $30 for section members and $35 for non-members. The ticket also includes $20 to spend on food and drink and a $10 parking pass for the Gold lot. Please come join us. Over the past few months, we have had several great events. In April, we had two regular Section meetings. The breakfast meeting included a legislative update by Thomas Worthy of the State Bar. The lunch meeting offered an overview of health insurance options for small businesses after healthcare reform. In addition, on April 26, we had a community service event through the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s Community Gardens project. Section members spent the morning tending to gardens that provide fresh, healthy food to local communities. In March, we again held two regular Section meetings. The breakfast meeting was an open networking event. The lunch featured Section member, Gene Chapman, who gave the 42 THE ATLANTA LAWYER May 2014 presentation “Ethics Issues: Four Things You Need to Know.” On March 31, Section members Robert Wellon, Robert Huestis, William Nabors, Alexa Kwartin, Michael Dunham, and James Attwood participated in a panel discussion at the University of Georgia Law School’s Solo and Small Firm Practice class. Professor Gregory C. Sowell moderated, and the panel addressed several practical considerations about operating as a small firm or sole practitioner. The Section also recently sponsored some tremendous programs. We donated $500 for the State Bar’s Law Day Dream Team that occurred in April. We also provided a $500 sponsorship for the Atlanta Bar’s LawJam event in June. Finally, the Section approved a $1,850 sponsorship for one intern to attend the Atlanta Bar Association’s Summer Law Internship Program. As for upcoming Section activities, in addition to the upcoming Braves social event on May 21, we will have two regular meetings in June, including a breakfast meeting on June 19, and a lunch meeting on June 26. Please mark these dates on your calendar. The Official News Publication of the Atlanta Bar Association
