SECTION UPDATE long term care insurance and life insurance strategies for our elderly clients at our January 18, 2017 meeting. ELDER LAW By Elizabeth O. Lawrence Koufman, Levine & Greiner, LLP [email protected] The Elder Law Section has had a great first half of the fiscal year. The Section held its kickoff breakfast meeting on September 21, 2016 at the Buckhead Club. Brian Deutsch of McCurdy & Candler, LLC, and Barbara Scurry of Senior Partners, gave a very informative presentation, “How to Protect Vulnerable Seniors from Financial Exploitation”. Our second breakfast, “Understanding the Elder Care Challenges for Families”, held on October 19, 2016, was led by Nancy Kriseman of Geriatric Consulting Services. This presentation helped clarify some of the issues and challenges that arise during representation of an elderly client and Ms. Kriseman offered suggestions as to how attorneys can partner with elder care professionals to help navigate through various challenges. Our third breakfast, “Millennials Don’t Polish Silver”, held on November 16, 2016, featured Spalding Nix of Spalding Nix Fine Art and longtime elder law section member Emory Schwall, of the Law Offices of Emory Schwall, who presented on the diminishing value of certain types of antique furniture, works of art, and porcelain as investments for our older clients. The Section will continue to hold its monthly breakfasts throughout the year on the third Wednesday of the month, at 7:30 a.m. at the Buckhead Club. Eric Burkhard of Burkhard Insurance, LLC and Brent Eden of Nease, Lagana, Eden & Culey, Inc. will speak on CLE Seminar The Section co-hosted the 1.5 hour CLE seminar “Winter is Coming–Planning During the Last Few Months of Life” on October 20 with the Estate Planning & Probate Section and the Financial Planning Association of Georgia at Dentons. The panel included The Honorable Jeryl D. Rosh of the DeKalb County Probate Court, elder law attorney Brian Deutsch of McCurdy & Candler, and financial planner David Hultstrom of Financial Architects, LLC, and was moderated by estate planning attorney Shelly Donaldson of The Donaldson Firm. Attendees enjoyed a cocktail reception and hors d’oeurves while mixing and mingling with attorneys, financial advisors, and other professionals. Be a Santa to a Senior With the holidays quickly approaching, our Section has pledged our involvement with "Be a Santa to a Senior." Through this program, Home Instead Senior Care Foundation collects gifts for seniors who might not otherwise have someone to share the holidays with. This program assists lonely and isolated seniors in our community, whether they are living in nursing homes, hospice, on their own, or on the street. Members of the Elder Law Section and the Estate Planning & Probate Section purchased an assortment of coloring books, colored pencils, games, puzzles, books, toiletries, blankets, socks, bathrobes, and slippers and brought them to the Estate Planning & Probate Section’s December meeting. These items will be wrapped and delivered this week to participating seniors in the Atlanta area. Thank you to our members and the members of the Estate Planning & Probate Section for your generosity!
