Monica trained as an artist and art historian,
and has had a diverse career as an artist,
academic, critic and curator. She studied at
Kingston University, University of Sussex, Royal
College of Art (RCA) and London University of
the Arts/Camberwell. She writes extensively
and was an art critic for Time Out from 1979 to
1988. Other publications to which she has
contributed include Art Monthly, Artscribe,
Artforum, THES, The Democrat and
Printmaking Today.
From 1981 to 1987, she taught at the Byam Shaw
School of Art, London College of Printing,
Epsom College of Art, and the Farnham College
of Art, and was visiting lecturer at St. Martin’s,
Middlesex, the RCA, and the Whitechapel and
Saatchi Galleries. In 1992 she co-founded and
became director of The Foundation for Women’s
Art, a not-for-profit organisation to increase
public understanding of the work of women
artists, historic and contemporary. From 2000
to 2007 she was an interviewer for the British
Library / Tate Archive Artists Lives, ‘Art
Professionals’ Oral history project. Monica also
works as a freelance broadcaster and talks
on printmaking to students and practitioners.
She is the owner and director of Printroom,
a trustee of the Print Makers Council and a
Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
