Kay has been working as a freelance artist for
20 years. In addition to prioritising her own
practice she facilitates workshops in prisons,
hostels, youth clubs and schools as well as within
the mental health system. She studied
photography to MA level and is now engaged in a
project that explores the process and practice
of working with archives and diaries to create
artwork. She is also director of Face Up, an arts
organisation working with women from conflicteffected countries and exploring human
responses to conflict and violence.

My passion for the defence of academic freedom has been growing since
working with CARA on a commission in 2012 entitled The Space
Between in which I worked with four refugee academic women who had
been exiled from their countries because of their beliefs and commitment
to speaking out against injustice and who sought refuge in the UK.
Meeting the women and getting to know them and finding out about
their lives has inspired me to work with other displaced people.
This image expresses my desire for academic freedom and for the
ability of all oppressed people to escape their cages, whatever these
may be.
