My family: Jelinek, Rookwood, Ephraim, Sluzewski?

I am a twentieth-century child of emigrant grandparents and find
myself profoundly influenced by my family story of migration. As I
gather the information together to write this account, I am struck
by the fact that neither of my parents raised their family in the
land where they were born and that for both of them this was a
repetition of an earlier family story of forced migration.
My father was born in Canada to European émigré parents who
had both travelled there around 1910. My paternal grandfather
arrived from England, at the age of 20, intending to take up
farming land being offered to new immigrants, but instead he
obtained funding to study to become a teacher. At about the same
time, my paternal grandmother, aged about 10, arrived by boat
from Czechoslovakia with her mother and four siblings. Her father,
who had travelled ahead to Canada, had been a village ‘elder’ to
whom villagers turned with their troubles. His decision to emigrate
