Soraya Syed is a London-based calligraphic
artist, who received the prestigious icazetname
or calligrapher’s license from Istanbul, Turkey in
2005. Her practice is a process of disciplined
freedom and she enjoys the constant tension
between remaining true to her classical training
while exploring further possibilities. She
recently co-founded an innovative app and web
project called Nuqta.com. www.artofthepen.com
Hurriyah was derived from animation installation of the same name,
through which I explored the visual and literal power of words and the
emotive term ‘freedom’. Hurriyah is written in an emblematic form,
personified, standing tall as if a boat set out to sea with the wind in her
sails, unraveling backwards until she ends as she began – a dot.
