The Lower Zambezi is a haven of wildlife, set right along a remote stretch of the Zambezi River. Bordering a marine park, this spot is renowned in Zambia and beyond for fishing as well as land safaris. Unashamedly plush and boutique yet utterly unique in style and design, my safari begins at Royal Zambezi Lodge. Walking out onto an open-air deck jutting out over a grassy headland on the river, to a private infinity pool and sundeck, is breathtaking. Sunbathing is even more surreal as elephants and hippos graze and bathe directly by my deck. Colours are spectacular: bright green grassland, silt brown river and my deep blue pool. Fishing, as a sport, is allowed in the reserve but with a catch-and-release policy. Here, it’s amongst the best in the world.
