The lesson The writing task asked students to write a reply letter to a friend of theirs who has written to ask for some information. In order for the children to get the information their friend needed they had to read a brochure and note down the details they needed. The lesson (see lesson plan in appendix IV, p.xiii) provides students with model texts and language input before they are asked to write. There are also a number of while writing activities which help students adopt a process approach in writing which gives priority to the communication of the message and leaves surface matters such as spelling and punctuation for the final stage. 2.2.4.
