TEACHING WRITTEN SKLLS COMMUNICATIVELY | Page 47

2. Section 2 The aim of this section is to put theory into practice by presenting two lessons which were prepared according to the criteria analyzed in section 1. Lesson 1 is an adapted writing task from the students’ activity book while Lesson 2 is a writing lesson which the teacher devised. The two lessons are referred below in turn. 2.1 Lesson 1 2.1.1. The aims of the lesson The aims of the lesson were to help students realize the use of writing as a form of communication between people that are not physically present and to become able to write coherent texts which are not only grammatically correct but also communicatively appropriate. 2.1.2. The objectives At the end of the lesson students would be able to:  use the imperative for giving instructions  understand how a sequence of actions can be combined using coordinating conjunction and  understand how cohesive devices can be used to indicate the coherence of a text  integrate reading and listening with writing  use note-taking in order to record useful information which they will need for another activity 2.1.3. General information The original task appears in Fun Way English 3 Activity book (Σεπυργιώτη κ.ά., 1998: 70) which is the students’ obligatory teaching material. After a presentation of some food items and a recipe in the course book, students are given a number of pictures presenting the process of making a cauliflower salad and they are asked to write the instruction under each picture (see appendix I). The task has many weaknesses concerning both the way it equips students to write and its communicative value so the teacher decided to adapt it by devising supplementary material (see appendix III) 47
