Appendix I LESSON 1 LESSON PLAN Class Primary 6 Initial information Time 45 min Date 27/03/2003 Title/Topic: A text about the Yanomami aboriginals in the Amazon river AIMS Aims: To help students develop reading skills in order to be able to take meaning from texts and not read mechanically. To help them read flexibly applying different skills according to the purpose of reading. To use both top-down and bottom-up strategies in order to create meaning from texts. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson students will be able to:  Use skimming in order to understand the overall organization of a text and get the gist.  Use scanning to locate specific information.  Make inferences.  Guess the meaning of words from the context.  To understand cohesive ties and anaphoric relations.  Relate personal experiences to new knowledge and practice extensive reading. Students’ background: The teacher needs to take into consideration the level of proficiency of her students, and in case there are students who underachieve, care should be taken so that they are helped by more competent peers. Anticipated problems: Children are used to asking for any unknown words and they do not feel confident until all words are explained. The text is about an Indian tribe whose name is not known to the children. Some background information might be necessary. This will be achieved by the use of photos referring to the area and the people. 21
