LESSON 2
TASKS FOR THE LESSON
You are going to have a discussion with your classmates in order to decide on the
destination of this year’s school trip. Before you start your discussion, can you think
of what language would be useful for such a discussion? The prompts below will help
you remember:
How do we state your preferences?
How do we state our agreement?
How do we disagree with someone?
How do we ask someone if he/she agrees with us?
How do we ask for clarification?
How do we conclude our discussion?
Task 2
As you know from last year, it is a tradition for our school to organize a trip at the end
of the school year to a destination which you can suggest choosing from a list. This
year’s trip will take place on 15th June. Below you can see a list of ten destinations.
Try to come to a common suggestion working as follows:
1. Read the list of destinations below and choose the three you would like most.
2. Choose another student with whom you have at least one choice in common.
Discuss with him/her the advantages and disadvantages of each of your
preferred destinations in order to limit your choices to three destinations.
3. Form larger groups of four students. Repeat the procedure so that you can
reach a similar consensus again.
4. Extend the discussion so that it can include the whole class. Your final
objective is that all students can agree to the same destination.
LIMITATIONS
a. discussions between pairs cannot take more than 5 minutes. Pairs have to
reach a consensus before the end of time limit in order to participate to a group
discussion.
b. discussions between groups cannot take more than 10 minutes. Groups have
to reach a consensus before the end of the time limit in order to participate to
the whole-class discussion.
c. Whole class discussion cannot take more than 15 minutes. All students need
to reach a consensus before the time limit in order for the school board to
consider the suggestion a valid one.
