2.2 Lesson 2 2.2.1. The aims of the Lesson The aims of the lesson were:  to help students realize the use of spoken language as a tool for communication and for solving problems  to give them the chance to engage in a natural and meaningful conversation with a topic which relates to their interests 2.2.2. The objectives At the end of the lesson it was expected that students would be able to:  take under consideration their interlocutor’s feedback when speaking  use certain language functions to express themselves  use spoken language as a means to support an opinion, to agree or disagree with someone’s suggestions  integrate speaking with reading and writing 2.2.3. General information Most part of the lesson is devoted to a pyramid discussion between students. However, as students are of an elementary level, the teacher considered that they should be equipped with some language input before they get involved in the process of the discussion. There are also some follow-up activities which provide integration of skills. 2.2.4. Description and justification Task 1(see appendix VIII) is a brainstorming activity which helps students bring passive knowledge stored in their LTM into active use. The language functions students recall are written down so that they can have something to refer to during the discussion if they feel the need to do so. Task 2(see appendix VIII) is a pyramid discussion which takes most of the lesson’s time. Students have to decide on the destination of this year’s school trip. The procedure is as follows: 51
