Appendix IV Class Primary 6 LESSON 2 :THE DIALOGUE LESSON PLAN Initial information Time 45 min Date 08/05/2003 Title/Topic A conversation between a hotel receptionist and a client. AIMS To help students understand natural conversation used for real purposes. To help them understand both the interactional and transactional uses of dialogue and to be able to listen flexibly according to their purpose. To help them integrate listening with other skills and understand the difference between oral and written language. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson students will be able to:  relate what they already know about a situation to new knowledge  understand the topic of the conversation  listen for general information  understand the relationship between people according to the way they talk to each other  listen for detail  produce oral language out of notes  transfer what they have learnt to written language Students’ background: There are 19 students in the class. They are all aged 12.It is a mixed ability class with some children attending afternoon classes and others who do not. There are many who underachieve and look indifferent. Students are usually exposed to dialogues which are well prepared and sound unnatural. Anticipated problems: Some students might not have stayed in a hotel so the teacher will have to provide some additional information. As they are not used to natural spoken language which incorporates mistakes, false starts and other features distinctive of authentic dialogues, they might be surprised. Finally, they believe they have to understand everything and if they fail to catch something they will probably be in panic. 32
